The Utilities Consumer Advocate’s (UCA) Annual Report for 2023-2024 includes the following key achievements:
- The UCA participated in 27 Alberta Utilities Commission (AUC) proceedings and intervened in 148 issues.
- The AUC agreed with UCA evidence and arguments on 78% of issues; with UCA evidence and arguments cited in AUC decisions reflecting over $829 million in total cost disallowances ($2.75 billion since 2013) that represented avoided additional costs on consumers’ bills. This figure represents a return on investment of over $300 for every $1 invested in UCA Regulatory Affairs for the year.
- The UCA helped over 26,000 Albertans seeking information or assistance related to their electricity or natural gas services through the 310-4UCA phone line. The UCA also received over 2,000 emails and provided mediation services to over 1,100 Albertans.
- The UCA's consumer education program conducted 34 outreach events. This outreach was complemented by over 1.5 million visits to the UCA website.
- As part of the AUC’s Winter Utility Reconnection program, 267 households who might otherwise have faced dangerous freezing temperatures without power or heat were assisted, with the UCA directly helping to reconnect 38 households.
- The Power and Natural Gas Consumer’s Panel met four times during Fiscal Year 2023-24, providing advice on a variety of issues, including increasing public awareness of UCA services available to help consumers make utility choices that are best for them, providing input regarding changes to the grid and market regulations, and encouraging more consumer participation in the competitive retail energy market.
