Finding the right company.
You have the power to choose between the regulated rate company or a competitive rate company to be your electricity and natural gas provider.
Based on where you live or work in Alberta, find the best energy providers, plans and payment options for you.
(Please note: Consumers cannot choose their Distribution companies. The list is provided here for information only.)
Regulated rate companies.
Customers who don't sign a contract for natural gas or electricity are served by a Regulated Retailer. The Regulated Rates are reviewed and approved by the Alberta Utilities Commission (AUC) and can change from month to month.
If you are a new utility customer, you may have to initially connect your electricity and natural gas services with the Regulated Retailer before considering other options (competitive energy contracts). Please see below for a list of Regulated Retailers.
If you live in a rural community and don't see a regulated retailer for natural gas or electricity in this section, you may be in the service territory of a Rural Electrification Association or a Natural Gas Co-op. Please contact the UCA Mediation Team at 310-4822 for more information.
Competitive price companies.
You can choose to purchase your electricity and natural gas energy from a variety of licensed Competitive Retailers. You and the retailer of your choice may enter into a contract for the type and length of energy service you want. If you choose to sign a contract and go with a competitive retailer, please keep in mind, it typically takes 10 to 15 days to switch energy services. However, it can take up to 90 days depending on the specific situation. You should check with the retailer of your choice and confirm the date when your new service will commence. Please see below for a list of licensed Competitive Retailers.
Distribution companies.
Distribution companies build and maintain the infrastructure that delivers your power and natural gas. They coordinate directly with the retailer you’ve chosen to ensure your billing is accurate through the provision of automated meter readings, and that the services you request take place in an orderly fashion, such as disconnecting and reconnecting your electricity when you move.
The delivery portion of your bill is where you find distribution charges along with costs associated with transmission, municipal franchise fees, rate riders and balancing pool. Whether you choose a Regulated or Competitive Retailer, your distribution company and the delivery portion of your electricity bill or natural gas bill won't change from one retailer to the next.
Distribution charges make it possible for distribution companies to operate, maintain and invest in the system. The Alberta Utility Commission (AUC) is responsible for determining and approving distribution rates.
Rural Electrification Associations.
Alberta Federation of Rural Electrification Associations (AFREA)
REA contacts are listed on the Alberta Federation of Rural Electrification Associations (AFREA) website. Some REAs offer electricity contracts for members in their territory. Contact your REA directly for more information.
Non-AFREA Rural Electrification Associations
AFREA membership is voluntary and at the discretion of the REA. To determine if your REA is a member, please contact AFREA or your REA directly.

Natural Gas Co-ops.
A rural gas co-op is a not-for-profit cooperative, incorporated or continued under the Rural Utilities Act, that owns its own distribution system and supplies natural gas to members in its rural franchise area of Alberta. Please contact the Federation of Alberta Gas Co-ops if you do not see contact information for your gas co-op or if you have questions about this contact list or your natural gas co-op.
